Teaching English in ThailandBack to Tefl World

Why Teach in Thailand?

Thailand offers more than pristine beaches, ornate temples, and world-famous street food — it is one of Asia’s most popular destinations for English teachers, with thousands of positions opening annually. Teaching opportunities exist throughout the “Land of Smiles”, from bustling Bangkok and cultural Chiang Mai to tropical island paradises such as Phuket and Koh Samui, peaceful rural communities, and everything in between.

Thai students often have solid reading and writing foundations but may struggle with speaking and listening fluency. Your role is to build their confidence through interactive, conversational activities in a supportive environment where making mistakes is encouraged. Living in Thailand means embracing the concept of sanuk (fun) — a relaxed, friendly lifestyle where hospitality is genuine and work-life balance is highly valued.

Whether you are planning a gap year adventure, hoping to save money while travelling Southeast Asia, or building a long-term teaching career, Thailand offers affordable living costs, warm weather year-round, exceptional food, and welcoming communities. Its central location also makes weekend travel to Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Malaysia easy and budget-friendly.

Requirements and Qualifications

Education & Certification

A bachelor’s degree in any field is mandatory for obtaining the Non-Immigrant B visa and work permit. Your degree must be notarised and legalised (authenticated by your government) as part of the visa process.

A recognised 120-hour TEFL/TESOL certification is strongly recommended and required by most reputable employers. While it is technically possible to find work without certification, having a TEFL qualification significantly improves your job prospects, salary potential, and classroom confidence. CELTA qualifications are particularly valued.

Teaching Experience

Entry-level positions are widely available, especially in public schools and private language centres. First-time teachers are welcomed, though experienced educators command higher salaries and gain access to international schools and university roles.

Nationality and Language Requirements

Schools generally prefer native English speakers from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. However, highly proficient non-native speakers with strong qualifications may also find opportunities.

Thai language skills are not required, though learning basic Thai greatly improves daily life and cultural integration.

Visas & Work Permits

Non-Immigrant B Visa

The Non-Immigrant B visa is essential for legal teaching employment in Thailand. Entering on a tourist visa with the intention of converting later is risky and strongly discouraged.

  • Secure a job offer from a registered Thai educational institution.
  • Prepare required documents (degree, criminal background check, passport, contract, photos).
  • Apply for the Non-B visa at a Thai embassy or consulate.
  • Obtain your work permit through the Ministry of Labour after arrival.
  • Extend your visa annually in line with your contract.

You must complete 90-day immigration reporting and obtain re-entry permits if travelling outside Thailand.

When to Apply

  • February–April: Peak hiring for May semester start
  • September–November: Secondary hiring period
  • Year-round: Language centres and private schools hire continuously

Most schools prefer in-person interviews. Many teachers complete a TEFL course in Thailand and secure employment locally.

Classroom & Cultural Tips

Thai schools value respect, professionalism, and modest dress. Students are typically polite and deferential, though often hesitant to speak publicly. Encourage participation through pair work, games, and small-group activities.

Understanding cultural concepts such as kreng jai (consideration for others), mai pen rai (no worries), and sanuk (fun) will greatly enhance your experience both inside and outside the classroom.
