The Solomon Islands is a nation consisting of six major islands and hundreds of smaller islands spread over a vast area east of Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific Ocean. Beautiful beaches, rainforests, volcanic peaks, and fantastic scuba diving among the coral reefs and numerous shipwrecks should entice much needed tourism, but tourists are put off by the difficulty in getting there and getting around the islands. Education on the islands is not compulsory and only 60% of children have access to schools which has had an adverse effect on the islanders’ literacy. Combine this with problems with teaching programs and teachers not being paid and the prospect of teaching on the English-speaking islands becomes less appealing. However, if you want a TEFL position on the islands, then you could try sending one of the NGOs a CV and covering letter asking about possible career opportunities. You should also check which vaccinations you might need if you are going to live there.
