Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa which has borders with Guinea, Liberia, and a coastline along the Atlantic coast.  The country has a tropical climate and diverse environment ranging from golden beaches along the coast to savannah, and to rainforest-shrouded mountains, which give the country its names: Lion Mountains.  Sierra Leone is one of the world’s top ten diamond producing countries in the world, and also has numerous other natural resources such as titanium and bauxite.  The country’s economy is dependent on these resources, but the production has been hampered due to their recent civil war which also saw the destruction of hundreds of its schools. Although education is compulsory at primary-school age, the troubles have resulted in two thirds of the population being illiterate.  If you want a TEFL position in Sierra Leone, then you could try sending one of its educational institutions or NGOs a CV and covering letter asking about possible career opportunities.  Check with your government’s foreign office to see what they recommend regarding living and working in the country.  You should also check which vaccinations you might need if you are going to live there.
