Portugal lies on the western side of the Iberian Peninsula bordering Spain to the east and facing the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Millions of tourists have been drawn to Portugal’s beautiful coastline, historic interior, fantastic seafood, and hospitable people. Fortunately for TEFL teachers, jobs are advertised for language schools throughout the year, and occasionally even on the Azores archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic (now served by the budget airline Ryan Air). Better paid jobs for more experienced teachers appear for the British Council and tertiary institutions.

In Lisbon, it’s “easy to be happy on a daily basis”, possibly due to the fact that the Portuguese “don’t live by extremes”. Quoted by two TEFL teachers - Gayle Harney and Zorana Orlic - I interviewed whilst in the capital, I feel that what they say really rings true when trying to describe Lisbon.
