Nauru is the world’s smallest island nation, located in Micronesia, north-east of Australia in the central Pacific Ocean. Its former name of “Pleasant Island” seems more apt for the coastline which consists of palm-fringed white beaches surrounded by coral reefs. Inland the island has evidence of phosphate mining which has affected 80% of the land area. Education is compulsory for its population of almost 10,000 from the age of six to sixteen years old. As you can imagine with such a low population in an English-speaking country TEFL positions are not advertised outside of the country. However, Australia’s University of New England trains the island’s teachers so if you are keen to teach on the island, you could contact them enquiring about career opportunities. You should check which vaccinations you might need if you are going to live on the island.
