Mauritania is a country in West Africa with a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean and the Sahara desert stretching across 90% of the country.  One-third of its 3.5-million population live in the capital, Nouakchott, which lies on the Atlantic coast.  Mauritania’s official language is Arabic, but French is also widely spoken while English is also becoming increasingly popular.  The government spends 10% of its low GDP on education which might be boosted if the country can harness its rich natural resources.   TEFL positions are rarely advertised outside of Mauritania, but if you are keen to work there, then you could try contacting one of its educational establishments or one of the NGOs based in the country to ask about career opportunities.   Before you sign a contract for a TEFL position in Mauritania, you should consult the advice of your government’s foreign office regarding working there. Remember to have the full list of vaccinations which are needed for Mauritania – the rabies vaccination sometimes needs a course of injections which require up to a month to complete before you depart for the country.
