Teaching English in Hong KongBack to Tefl World

Why Teach in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong represents one of the most dynamic, fast-paced, and lucrative TEFL destinations in the world. As a global financial hub where East meets West, it offers an incredible mix of towering skyscrapers, ancient temples, lush mountain trails, and a world-renowned culinary scene.

English is an official language alongside Cantonese, and the government places an enormous emphasis on English proficiency to maintain the city's status as a premier international business center. This means demand for qualified teachers is exceptional, and the compensation packages—particularly within the government's public school system—are some of the highest available globally.

Whether you are teaching energetic young learners in a bustling private language center or working within the prestigious public school network, Hong Kong offers a challenging but highly rewarding environment. It serves as an incredible gateway for exploring the rest of Asia, all while enjoying an ultra-modern, remarkably safe, and efficient city.

Requirements and Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • A bachelor's degree (in any field) is a strict legal requirement mandated by the Hong Kong Immigration Department for securing an Employment Visa.
  • A 120-hour TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA certificate is the industry standard. Advanced certifications or those with practical teaching components are highly regarded.
  • For the highly coveted government public school jobs, possessing a formal teaching license (like a PGCE, QTS, or B.Ed.) alongside your degree puts you in the strongest possible position.
  • Schools almost exclusively seek teachers with native-level English proficiency. The immigration and visa process tends to heavily favor passport holders from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and South Africa.

Background Check & Health Check

  • A clean criminal background check (Sexual Conviction Record Check - SCRC) is strictly required for anyone working with minors.
  • While a pre-arrival medical check isn't always mandated for the visa, individual schools may require one as part of their onboarding process.

Language Skills

  • You do not need to speak Cantonese or Mandarin to teach. In fact, most schools operate on a strict "English-only" policy in the classroom.
  • While daily life is easily navigated in English due to bilingual signage and widespread proficiency, learning a few basic phrases in Cantonese is a great way to show respect for the local culture.

Visas & Work Permits

Working on a tourist visa is strictly illegal in Hong Kong. The Immigration Department is rigorous, but the process is highly structured.

  • Employment Visa (General Employment Policy): You must have a confirmed job offer before you apply. Your school acts as your sponsor and must prove to immigration that you possess specialized skills (your TEFL qualification and native-level English) that are not readily available in the local labor market.
  • Processing Time: Visa processing usually takes 4 to 8 weeks. Once approved, your visa is tied directly to your employer; if you switch jobs, you must apply for a formal visa transfer.

When to Apply

The hiring timeline depends on the type of school you wish to join:

  • January–April: The critical recruitment window for the government’s NET (Native-speaking English Teacher) Scheme and international schools, aiming for an August/September start.
  • Year-round: Private learning centers, tutorial academies, and kindergartens hire continuously throughout the year as student intake fluctuates and teachers transition in and out of the city.

Where to Teach

Hong Kong Island

The bustling, glamorous heart of the city's financial and expat community. Teaching here means being close to famous nightlife spots like Soho and Lan Kwai Fong, but it also comes with the highest rent prices in the territory.

Kowloon

Located directly across Victoria Harbour, Kowloon is incredibly densely populated and offers a more localized, traditional, and authentic Hong Kong vibe. Rent is slightly cheaper than on the Island, and the street food scene is legendary.

The New Territories

Stretching up to the border with mainland China, the New Territories offer a much quieter lifestyle, significantly larger apartments for your money, and easy access to hiking trails and nature parks. Many public schools are located here.

Types of Teaching Jobs & Salaries

Salaries in Hong Kong are high, and the tax rate is famously low (capped at around 15-17%).

  • The NET Scheme (Public Schools): The gold standard for teaching in Hong Kong. Run by the Education Bureau, this scheme places foreign teachers in primary and secondary state schools. Salaries range from HK$32,000 to HK$76,000+ ($4,100–$9,700 USD) per month. Most critically, it often includes a monthly housing allowance of around HK$20,000 ($2,500 USD) and flight reimbursements.
  • Private Learning Centers & Tutorial Academies: The most common entry point for newer teachers. You will typically work afternoons, evenings, and weekends helping students prepare for exams or improve conversational skills. Salaries generally range from HK$20,000 to HK$26,000 ($2,500–$3,300 USD) per month.
  • International Schools: Require a formal home-country teaching license and years of experience. They offer exceptional packages, often matching or exceeding the top end of the NET scheme.
  • Private Tutoring: Highly lucrative, with experienced tutors charging anywhere from HK$300 to HK$800+ per hour. Note: Ensure your visa conditions legally permit you to engage in freelance tutoring.

Cost of Living

Hong Kong is a city of extremes. While you will likely earn a high salary, managing your expectations around living space is crucial.

  • Housing: Rent is exorbitantly high, and apartments are famously tiny (often referred to as "nano flats"). A standard studio or small one-bedroom apartment on Hong Kong Island can easily cost HK$15,000 to HK$20,000 ($1,900–$2,500 USD) per month. Moving to the New Territories or sharing an apartment is the best way to lower this cost.
  • Food & Dining: You can spend as much or as little as you want. Local cha chaan tengs (diners) and street markets offer fantastic meals for HK$40–$60 ($5–$8 USD). Conversely, Western groceries and high-end expat restaurants are very expensive.
  • Transportation: The MTR (subway) is arguably the best public transit system in the world—spotlessly clean, hyper-efficient, and very cheap. Taxis and double-decker buses are also highly affordable.
  • Overall Budget: If you are not on a contract that provides a housing allowance, rent will consume 40-50% of your salary at a private learning center. However, low taxes and cheap local food mean a comfortable, active lifestyle is still entirely achievable.

Classroom & Cultural Tips

Professional Expectations

  • Academic Pressure: The education system in Hong Kong is highly competitive. Students face immense pressure from a very young age to perform well on exams. As a teacher, you will be expected to deliver measurable results, and parents are heavily invested in their children's progress.
  • Dress Code: Workplaces are quite formal. Men are generally expected to wear shirts and ties, and women should wear smart, conservative business attire.

Teaching Strategies

  • Breaking the Ice: Because of the intense academic focus, students are often taught via rote memorization and can be incredibly shy about speaking up for fear of making a mistake. Creating a highly encouraging, energetic, and "safe" environment for spoken English is usually your primary role as a foreign teacher.

Cultural Etiquette

  • "Face" Culture: Like much of East Asia, the concept of "saving face" is paramount. Never publicly scold, embarrass, or single out a student or colleague. Feedback should be constructive and delivered privately when possible.
  • Fast-Paced Lifestyle: Everything in Hong Kong moves quickly. People walk fast, eat fast, and work fast. Efficiency is highly prized, and adapting to the intense, buzzing rhythm of the city is key to thriving there.

TEFL: Teaching English… For Love? Wednesday 29 Jan 2020

I think most of us will have been attracted to one of our colleagues in the staff room at one time or another.  At a school in Hong Kong I once became smitten by one of my co-workers; was it her looks, her charm, or her knowledge of English verb tenses? I don’t know, but I couldn’t get her out of my mind – it would wander to visions of us staring at each other adoringly over a copy of Cutting Edge’s Teachers’ book (Pre-Int edition), or imagining us skipping hand-in-hand to a lecture on the latest innovations in English language teaching by Scott Thornbury.
