Most Embarrassing Moments in the Classroom

This didn’t happen to me thankfully, but it happened to a former colleague of mine at my university.  After reading this, you will never make the same mistake!  Some of the lecture halls at the campus were fitted out with the most up-to-date audio equipment where instructors just had to clip a wireless microphone to their clothes and that would ensure that everyone in the auditorium could hear the speaker.

During one lesson my co-worker was dealing with hot sweats and flushes after a rather enthusiastic night’s drinking culminating with a kebab.  Rumblings in his stomach preceded the realization that he urgently needed to go to the toilet; he quickly thought of an activity to keep the full lecture theatre of students busy and explained that he was ‘popping out to pick up his USB stick from the staff room’ and then hurried to the lavatory.

After finishing his ‘business’ and feeling very relieved he returned to a deathly quiet lecture hall where the students were unable to meet his eye, some seemed to have a trembling energy about them – almost as if they were ready to burst.  The blood drained from his face when it dawned on him – he hadn’t removed his microphone – the hot, sweaty and clammy feelings returned mixed with a generous helping of embarrassment.  He didn’t renew his contract at the university.
