Mud-Fest with 4DS
We promised mud, beer, fun and sun and we delivered all apart from the sun.  The 4DS Social Events group, Dongtan Clan had an amazing time at the Boryeong Mud-Fest.  A huge thanks, from everyone who attended, to Joanne who organized another great social event.

Blog:Daniel Brewer goes to Everland.
One of our co-workers, Dave, is leaving us so on his last weekend Kevin, Dave, and I went to the Disneyland of Korea called Everland.  It was a great theme park, had tons of good rides and one of the largest/steepest wooden roller coasters in the world. The lines were not bad, we were able to ride anything we wanted and NOT wait an insane amount of time. A great bonus to the park for me was the prices were the same on the inside as they were on the outside. I went there with the intent to spend a lot of money (figuring it was like a USA theme park), and left there spending a third of what I thought I was going to, so stoked. The park was a lot of fun and a good way to send Dave home.

Samcheongdong: Seoul's Best Kept Secret.
There is more above the river than just Itaewon, Insadong and Hongdae. One of my favorite places to go is Samcheong dong. It is near Insadong but in my opinion much more Korean and quieter.

The way I like to go there is by going out Anguk Station exit 5. Then I cross the street towards the Tours de Jours (which is a bakery that makes spongy cakes that taste like sugary Styrofoam). I take the first right and keep walking straight past numerous stores and restaurants such as 목쉬돈나 - a place famous for dukbokki and past 천진포자-a snack place renowned for pork buns and past a strange cafe with pink dogs until I hit Samcheongdong.

Samcheongdong is a great cafe street and restaurant street. My favorite place for coffee is Yeon which is on an elevated walkway that has a ancient look to it. It's right near a toy museum. Yeon is the hippie cafe where the servers don't wear shoes even in the dead of winter and the interior has a traditional han-ok style, but like it has been refinished and repainted for modern times. The servers there are relaxed in a Zen way and the entire place induces a calming sigh. It's a bit of peace in the hectic world of Seoul Korea.

I'm also a big fan of the Book Cafe. The place has walls of books and you can browse through any of the books there and you can also get a great cup of coffee.

Restaurants, I really like Gallery Hyun. It's a bit pricy, but they have a wonderful wine list and excellent lamb chops. The chops were breaded with panko flakes and served with a rich demiglace. It's not an ample meal, but great for when you wish to feel posh.

Samcheong Dong is a great place for a walk, a contemplative cup of coffee, and especially great for a date if you're trying to impress. Let's just not all go there at once so it keeps it's allure. For more information on places to eat in Seoul visit www.seouleats.com

Blog:Kevin Rice's New Life in Korea
Life in Korea is still a blast. Every time we have a good weekend we wonder if we can possibly out do it. We as a group are having so much fun together whatever it is we are doing. About a couple weeks ago we were told we were going to have a workshop with all of the foreign teachers and the Korean teachers. By workshop, most of the teachers had to perform their class the way they do it in front of all of us other teachers so we could get ideas on how to do things in our classes. It was actually very helpful for someone like me because I am NO teacher and still learning new things everyday.

This workshop took place on Friday night directly after work. Once everyone went through their routines, we headed to this restaurant right next to the school in which our principal paid for. It was a Korean BBQ duck restaurant that was delicious. Once we finished dinner, we got on one of the school's school buses and drove to a resort about an hour and a half away. We were told that the resort had a theme park that we would go to on Saturday if it was not raining. If it was raining, we were going to do pottery instead. When we got to the resort, there were the six of us foreign teachers (Tate, Jillian, Daniel, Dave, myself and our new teacher Ta-Leah), and maybe 6 of the other Korean teachers and it was already close to 11:30 PM but we all stayed up and sat around a table and chatted about so many different things. It was actually something that was so good for us because a trip like that breaks the ice between the foreign teachers and Korean teachers. The next week at work, I noticed a difference in the way we interacted with one another in the workplace, so I can say it was an awesome thing for us.  Visit Kevin's blog fore more of his news.

Itaewon's Food Alley
Placement Consultant, Tristan Aitchison recently appeared in The Joong Ang Daily, a leading English language newspaper of Korea.  He wasn't sharing his vast knowledge of teaching in Korea but rather the gastronomic delights of the foreign food restaurants of Itaewon, Seoul.  Read the full article here.

I’m so hungry….but it’s all in Korean?
Eating out in Korea is cheap and kimbab houses are a convenient option and can be found on every main street.  The food is fast but also healthy.  The one small problem, for those just arriving in Korea or those too lazy to learn Hangeul, is the menu is in Korean with no pictures.  However, fear not, some clever soul has translated the entire menu of the leading chain, Kimbab Nara.  Click here to view.
